Hereditary Cancer and Genetic Testing

Genetic testing benefits for people diagnosed with prostate cancer

For anyone diagnosed with prostate cancer, genetic testing may provide the following information and benefit:

  • Men with metastatic castration-resistent prostate cancer who test positive for an inherited mutation in BRCA1BRCA2ATM or another gene linked to prostate cancer may be eligible for treatment with a treatment with a targeted therapy (e.g. a PARP inhibitor).
  • Men who test positive for an inherited mutation in EPCAMMLH1MSH2MSH6 or PMS2 may be eligible for treatment with an immunotherapy agent.
  • Men with prostate cancer who test positive for an inherited mutation in a gene linked to prostate cancer may be eligible for certain clinical trials and research studies.
  • Testing can help men with prostate cancer understand their risk for additional cancers and make medical decisions about risk management.
  • Test results can help the relatives of men with prostate cancer understand their risk for cancer and take actions to stay healthy.
