Types of Treatment for Cancer

There are many options for treating hereditary cancers. Choice of treatment can be personalized based on cancer type, stage and genetics.

Overview of types of treatment for cancer

Oncologists use several strategies to treat cancer. Treatment recommendations depend on several factors including:

  • Cancer site or which organ the tumor originated from (e.g. breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, etc.)
  • Cancer subtype based on additional testing or microscopic examination of the tumor (e.g. triple-negative breast cancer, serous ovarian cancer, etc.)
  • Stage of cancer, based on tumor size and whether it has spread to other areas of the body.
  • How fast the cancer is growing or how likely it is to spread

There are different categories of cancer treatment. Each type of treatment comes with specific benefits, risks, and side effects. The major categories of cancer treatment are listed below.

Cancer treatments can also be categorized by when and how they are used within a treatment cycle. You can click on the links for more information about how each type of therapy is used.
