About the Study
The Vanguard Study is looking at how multi-cancer detection (MCD) blood tests could fit into cancer screening. Adults ages 45-75 who do not have cancer will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Everyone will have blood drawn at enrollment and again about 1 year later. The study also looks at questionnaires and what follow-up care happens after an abnormal result.
This Study is Open To:
People may be eligible if they:
- Are between 45 and 75 years old
- Do not currently have cancer
- Can complete questionnaires during the study
- Can return for a second blood draw about 1 year after enrollment
This Study is NOT Open To:
People who:
- Had a solid tumor or blood cancer diagnosis (with or without treatment) within the last 5 years
- Are currently being evaluated for possible cancer (for example, you have upcoming tests to find out whether you have cancer)
- Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant in the next year
What the Study Involves
Participants will:
- Be randomly assigned to one of three groups.
- Group 1: blood is tested using the Shield multi-cancer detection (MCD) test at enrollment and again about 1 year later
- Group 2: blood is tested using the Avantect multi-cancer detection (MCD) test at enrollment and again about 1 year later
- Group 3: participants will have blood drawn at enrollment and again about 1 year later, but no MCD testing will be performed as part of the study.
- Complete questionnaires during the study (for example, about health history, demographics, and cancer screening behaviors).
- If you have an abnormal (positive) MCD result, your study team and health care team will guide next steps. Follow-up testing may be needed to find out whether cancer is present.
- Continue routine cancer screening recommended for your age and risk factors.
Time commitment: Participation lasts up to about 2 years, including questionnaires and follow-up.
