Opening the Conversation Study

About the Study

This study will look at a program designed to help young couples cope with and communicate about cancer-related reproductive and sexual health concerns.

This study will look at reproductive decisions, sexual distress, relationship and emotional health in cancer and whether a behavioral intervention works to improve these issues. The research team will evaluate how well the intervention works on survivors' and their partners' reproductive and sexual distress as well as the relationship, sexual, and psychosocial health outcomes.

Couples will be randomly assigned to one of two groups:

  • Group 1: Attend 5 sessions (1.5 hours each) consisting of education and skills training to address cancer-related reproductive and sexual health concerns. Sessions occur via videoconference.
  • Group 2: Attend 4 sessions (1.5 hours each) consisting of education and skills training to address cancer-related concerns. Sessions occur via videoconference.

Level of reproductive and sexual distress will be measured at the beginning of the study, 2 weeks after the study is completed, and again at 3 months after the study is completed.
