About the Study

EnergyPoints is an app that teaches you how to self-administer acupressure to manage fatigue and poor sleep related to cancer. The purpose of the study is to look at whether the EnergyPoints app can help cancer survivors use acupressure to manage fatigue and sleep problems. We want to learn how the app affects fatigue, sleep quality and amount, activity, and overall quality of life.

To learn more about participating in the study, please visit the study overview page and complete the online screener: https://energypointsapp.com/acupressure-study/overview/

This Study is Open To:

  • Have cancer or have been treated for cancer

  • Have a moderate level of fatigue
  • Be willing to do self-acupressure daily
  • Have a smartphone (iPhone 8 or later or Android 11 or later)
  • Be willing to wear a Fitbit 24/7 (except when charging) throughout the study

What the Study Involves

The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether EnergyPoints, a mobile health app on your phone that guides you to do self-acupressure, can decrease your fatigue and improve your sleep. The study will last 8 or 14 weeks (depending on which group you get assigned to by chance). If you’re interested in participating in the study, please visit the study overview page and complete the online screener. https://energypointsapp.com/acupressure-study/overview/.

Acupressure consists of applying physical pressure with your fingers or a device to small locations on the body called acupoints. We will conduct this clinical trial remotely, allowing you to use the app wherever you are. Your participation will involve using the app daily while wearing a fitness tracker (like a Fitbit) on your wrist, answering questions on the app and online, as well as completing a questionnaire and participating in an interview at the end of the study.

You will be assigned by chance to one of two groups. In both groups, you will have a 1-week baseline week to get used to the Fitbit and answer online questions daily and weekly. If you are in the Immediate Group, you will start the 6-week trial using the EnergyPoints app immediately following the 1-week baseline. If you are in the Wait-List Group, you will be on a waitlist for 6 weeks following the 1-week baseline during which time you wear the fitness tracker and answer online questions daily and weekly. At the end of the waiting period, you will begin the 6-week trial of using the EnergyPoints app.

The risks to participating are minimal. There is a small risk of bruising or getting sore at a point where you apply pressure. As with any mobile app, there is the possibility that electronic information could be viewed by third parties not involved in the study.

We cannot promise any benefits to you from your being in the study. However, it is possible that using acupressure might improve your fatigue and/or sleep. You may use any other approaches to improve your fatigue and/or sleep while you are in the study.

You will be provided with compensation for completing assessments (wearing a Fitbit 24/7 and completing surveys) as compensation for your time. Depending on your group assignment, you may receive either $200 or $275.
