I have worked in the medical field for 37 years, most of those years at Montgomery Breast Center, where I developed a deep passion for supporting women diagnosed with breast cancer and helping them navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
In 2004, my journey became personal when my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After researching my family history and discovering that my paternal uncle had also passed away from pancreatic cancer, I decided to pursue genetic counseling. Ultimately, I chose to undergo genetic testing, and in 2016, I learned that I carry the BRCA2 gene mutation. Through genetic testing, I was introduced to FORCE, and I was incredibly grateful to connect with others who truly understood this path. From the beginning, I have felt called to share my story in hopes that it might help someone else facing similar challenges. I always emphasize that what was right for me may not be right for someone else — there are no universally “right” or “wrong” decisions. But knowledge is empowering, and having information allows individuals to make informed choices about their health and future.
Volunteering with FORCE allows me to combine my professional experience with my personal journey. I am passionate about advocating so that all women and men have access to genetic testing, quality healthcare, and the support they deserve. It is an honor to stand alongside this community and work toward a future where no one has to navigate hereditary cancer risk alone. As a Patient Advocate Leader volunteer since 2023, Tina has sent numerous emails and delivered testimony to state lawmakers and committee members, explaining the importance of key legislation and urging their support. She has also participated in our annual FORCE Federal Advocacy Day and has tirelessly supported FORCE by sharing letters and real-world experiences to help clarify the implementation of Alabama’s Medicaid coverage for genetic testing. Thank you for making such a meaningful impact for the hereditary cancer community in Alabama!
