This research study suggests that breast cancer treatment costs can vary widely, for the insurance company and the patient.
This study is a retrospective study based on available database information. As such, not all the information on cancer cost was included if it fell outside their 10-month time frame. There is the possibility that cost coding was misclassified which was not verified. Data on ethnicity/race, cancer stage, and tumor characteristics were also not available.
However, this research study does not include women who don’t have insurance and because the study used an 18-month time frame, the researchers could not estimate the total cost of breast cancer care. Newer treatments were not evaluated.
