Update: What people with breast implants should know about rare cancers and other safety concerns

Breast implants are used for reconstruction after mastectomy and for cosmetic enlargement of the breasts. Most people with implants do not develop serious problems. However, rare cancers may develop in the scar tissue around breast implants. Implants may also be linked to other symptoms throughout the body, sometimes called breast implant illness. Study: Possible link between BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and rare breast implant-associated lymphoma

The causes of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a rare cancer that develops near implants, are unknown. Results from this study suggest that people with an inherited mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 may be at increased risk for BIA-ALCL. However, because very few cases of BIA-ALCL occurred among participants, more research is needed to confirm or refute this finding. (Posted 7/14/2025)

Update: FDA reports on new cancers linked to breast implants

New cancers have been found in women with both textured and smooth implants that are filled with either saline or silicone. These cancers are extremely rare. The FDA has reported cases of a type of skin cancer and blood cancers in the scar tissue that forms around breast implants. The newly reported lymphomas are different from the previously reported breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Update: Stronger guidance about breast implant safety

The FDA issued new guidance for breast implants so that all people with breast implants have the appropriate information to understand and make decisions about their healthcare. Required features include box warning, patient decision checklist, guidelines for screening for implant ruptures and patient device cards. (posted 12/14/21)
