A note from Bethanie
My name is Bethanie and I am the new Outreach Coordinator of South Carolina. I am 41 and a mother of three teenagers. I was adopted but thankfully found mybirth mother 20 years ago and she was able to share the family history of breast cancer with me before her death at age 48. When I was 35 my doctors started early surveillance. No one ever mentioned to me there was a genetic test until 2 years ago when I relocated to Columbia where I was referred for genetic counseling 4 times, and finally I gave in. I tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation in 2009 and began looking at my options. After I was given my genetic test results I was so desperate to talk to someone who shared this experience. I felt like my friends didn't really get "it." I attended the FORCE conference in June this past yearand just knew this was the organization that wanted to hear our voices.Through my interaction with FORCE, I began to feel empowered to make my own decisions to impact my health. I became so thankful that I had knowledge in advance and could be proactive. I found a great set of docs in Charleston to do the natural breast reconstruction with the DIEP method. I had my surgery this past summer and am now "free of breast tissue." Which is a great relief.
Now, I want to give back what others gave to me and I want to develop a group in SC who gives to each other. My visionis that everyone that requests or wants it can have a support person to walk with them through their journey. Our group is new and we are just getting started. I am so excited!!!! I live in Columbia which I hope will be a central location for meetings and events. However, we can go to the greatest need. I hope you can attend our upcoming meetings. I look forward to meeting you and corresponding with all of you. Please email me with comments, questions and requests. bethanieb@facingourrisk.org
Best Regards
