Our bodies need vitamins and minerals (usually in small amounts) to function properly. Most people can get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals by eating a healthy and balanced diet. However, factors such as our age, the medications we take, or even where we live may affect our ability to obtain the proper vitamins and minerals to keep us healthy. In some cases supplements are recommended to assure adequate intake.

As with diet, researchers are studying vitamins and minerals to see how they affect cancer risk. Many studies have been inconclusive. Most health care experts do not recommend high doses of supplements to prevent or treat cancer. Large doses of certain supplements can actually harm us. In some cases, supplements can interfere with cancer treatment. 

For most people, taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement is safe. It is important to consult with a nutritionist before taking supplements while in treatment or to lower your risk for cancer.
