Personal Story
DaFin was diagnosed with stage 4 Ovarian Cancer in December of 2004. She later tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. She fought hard for seven years all the while advocating the importance of testing for hereditary cancer. She lost her mother to Ovarian Cancer in 2009 and supported her daughter, who also tested positive for BRCA1, as she completed her preventive surgeries.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Wayne Koontz. Her daughter, Jami Barbee and her husband Andy; Her son Josh Koontz and his wife, Jordan; and five grandchildren who were the lights of her life: Austin, Ashtyn, Ella, River, and Danna, who will always be Mammy's babies.
Our hope is that with the help of donations in her memory, the support and education provided by FORCE will help others in their stuggle with the BRCA1 gene.
