Ellyn Davidson’s TeamFORCE Runs Detroit

EVENT NAME: Detroit Half Marathon

RAISED To Date: $13,235

This year in October, I’ll set out for my first half marathon running in Detroit. I started running in August and will continue to train. It’s not always easy but I remind myself how difficult chemo was and thinking about that, I can push through any pain or discomfort.

I am running a half Marathon to support an organization I’ve been involved with since my diagnosis. FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered is a 16 year old organization dedicated to helping families with hereditary cancer. Nearly a year ago, I joined their board and now proudly serve as board president. I've formed a team to run or walk the Detroit Free Press Marathon and I've set a goal for Team FORCE runs Detroit to raise $20,000 for an organization that does so much for so many.

Lacey turned 16 this year and she and all of her amazing and wonderful friends are a constant reminder to me of the reason I fight so hard. She has a 50/50 chance of inheriting this mutation, and I need to do everything in my power to change what that means for her. It’s for Lacey, her friends and all the other young girls out there that I ask for your support.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continuing support of my journey.

FORCE has made incredible progress with a very limited budget. Here’s a quick snapshot:

  • FORCE joined forces with the ACLU to fight the Myriad Gene Patent and won. This decreased the cost of genetic testing from $3,500 to as low as $250, making testing available to all even when insurance will not cover the cost.
  • FORCE was the only organization encouraging the FDA to make the newest drug available to Ovarian Cancer patients. This drug, Lymparza, is a PARP Inhibitor that is helping patients with incredibly limited side effects.
  • FORCE works with big pharma to help them fill clinical trials for drugs that impact our community. Without that help, these amazing drugs cannot be tested and will not make it to market.
  • FORCE helped pass the Early Act which educates both physicians and women about the risk of breast cancer under the age of 50—education we desperately need
  • FORCE helped pass GINA—the Genetics Information Non Discrimination Act which means employers and health insurers cannot discriminate against people with a genetic mutation—a win for hereditary cancer AND a win for all people with a genetic predisposition to a disease.

I sent personal emails to my friends, family and colleagues, posted on my personal Facebook page and organized a few theater event fundraisers to add to my efforts.
