My journey

I'm 31years old and have been married to my husband (whom is 7years younger) for 6years. I found out I was BRCA1+ just after giving birth to my daughter 4years ago after my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and the gene, and I didn't know where to turn. At first I was told that the only option available because of my age was surveillance, only to find later that isn't the truth. In July 2009 I underwent a BSO and 7months later in February this year, my PBM with two stage reconstruction using expander implants.

The hardest part of my journey

The lack of support, I had no one to turn to when I had my oophorectomy and felt lost and lonely, I honestly thought I had ruined my life, I had no one to share my feelings that had been through it before and no one to tell me it was going to be ok....I found first the BRCA Umbrella and and then was directed to the FORCE website at the same time I also formed a friendship with a group of women on facebook. I was and continue to be frustrated by the lack of support in my community as well as my country.

If I could do it over again

I would insist on having my uterus removed....

My participation with FORCE

FORCE has made me feel like I belong, it has enriched my life and my heart and I no longer feel lost and lonely, I feel inspired and empowered. I no longer feel like my mutation is a burden, it's more like a blessing and FORCE has helped me come to terms with that.

Other thoughts

There are not enough words that I could express for my gratitude to Sue Friedman, if she had not had the vision and passion to create this site, I hate to think where in my life I would be right now. I owe her so much and can only hope that I can be half the women she is. I hope with all that I have I can return next year and give back to Sue and everyone involved in FORCE
