My journey

I am 41 and have been married to my wonderful husband for 14 years. We have one beautiful daughter. I have an identical twin sister who was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer just two months after our 40th birthday in Dec of 2011. I have a 44 year old sister who was just diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb of 2013. As of June 2013, both are undergoing chemo and are doing well.

The genetic counselor suggested testing after my twin sister was diagnosed. There is no history of cancer (that we know of) in our family so we didn't think anything of it. We were incredibly shocked when we found out she had the BRCA1 mutation (187delag). We later found out it was passed to us through our dad. His father was Ashkenazi Jew.

I had my fallopian tubes/ovaries out right after I found out about my twin sister. My PBM is scheduled for August 2013. It's been a whirlwind last few years but we are a family of survivors and soon to be previvor!

The hardest part of my journey

So far the hardest part of my journey has been the decision to move forward with my PBM. For some reason it was an easy decision for me to have my tubes/ovaries removed. Luckily, the menopause symptoms have been mild too. But, removing my breasts just seems a lot more daunting. Thankfully this site is full of wonderful women who are going through the same thing or who have been through the same thing! It's like having your own personal support system.
