My journey

I tested positive for the BRCA2 gene 8 years ago. I was tested because I am from 3 generations of breast cancer. My maternal grandmother, maternal aunt, mother and 2 sisters have all had breast cancer. I have not had cancer. I’ve had prophylactic mastectomies with implants. I also had my ovaries removed.

The hardest part of my journey

My journey had not been difficult. I am relieved not to be focused on getting breast cancer.

If I could do it over again

Use saline implants not silicone. I had to replace my silicone implants.

My participation with FORCE

Keeps me up to date on the predispositions to cancer and genetic news.

Other thoughts

After being so proactive about my health, I developed Alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes total hair loss. I became very frustrated by the lack of fun and fashionable options available to women who are experiencing medical hair loss. In addition to the choices being so limited, so were the resource directories where women could easily go to find suitable alternatives to wearing wigs, especially those women being treated in facilities that did not offer a 'cancer boutique'. I designed a beautiful and unusual scarf for women and girls that solves the fashion issue and brings a fully functional scarf to a woman who is losing her hair. I am relentless in my pursuit to pair current fashion with a solution for medical hair loss. My scarf, The BeauBeau, uses the highest quality materials, including rayon batik, silk, rayon jersey, cashmere blends. Each scarf is lined with a fine cotton layer which wicks away moisture and keeps the scarf securely on the head. The BeauBeau is pre-designed with many styling options but without the difficulty of tying a scarf behind your head. 4women also makes BeauBeaus for the active, exercising woman. My mission is to make my design readily available to women who are searching for a fashionable option during their treatment. It's so important to address the appearance side of treatment (baldness). Having something beautiful to wear can mean the difference in a woman's positive attitude. Just because you have lost your hair does not mean you have lost your sense of style.
