I am 55 years of age, and after being diagnosed with stage two breast cancer at 53, (6 rounds of chemo, followed by a double masectomy) I was encouraged by my oncologist to undergo genetic counseling. I was uncertain about family history (It's complicated) and felt like I needed to know how broad my risk was for the possibility for the reoccurance of cancer in the future.
This whole experience has been a real eye opener for me. My genetic counselor suggested I check this website, and I feel much more informed having read through other ladies' stories, and comforted knowing that the tools available to us for testing are an assist to all of us acting preventatively.
The hardest part of being diagnosed with breast cancer was trying to get an answer as to 'why'...When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I wanted to know why. Was it the fact that as a type 1 diabetic I was taking insulin (since age 19), and was dealing with an IGF growth factor, or was this something unknown in my family history? I was was told by my surgeon initially I needed to do a lumpectomy on my right side...Because I was fearful of a cancer reoccurance (before I was genetically tested) I elected to do a double masectomy.
I'm glad I made the desicions that I did, I have no regrets.
