Even though my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 years before me that is not who I got the gene mutation. My father is BRCA2 positive as are a few members of his family on his mother's side. Given my young age of breast cancer the doctor's encouraged me to get tested. Although I was pretty sure I was positive before taking the test.
I am now coming to terms with the need to have my ovaries/fallopian tubes removed and a bi-lateral mastectomy. I have just finished my cancer treatments and need a much deserved break to heal and adjust to the upcoming challenges I face.
Coming to terms with the upcoming surgeries. It is a daily struggle.
No, I accept this is my journey and I will travel it.
I have found a sense of community here and a place to gain knowledge.
Doctor's have never spent time evaluating my father's side of the family, always my mother's. If there is one thing I want people to take away from my experiences is genetics are 50% mother and 50% father. Evaluating both sides of your family are very important.
