Session: Advocating for appropriate testing: the Michigan experience:

This 90-minute concurrent session will present research results and lessons learned about genetic testing in the community setting based on genetic testing in Michigan state. Dr. Sutphen and Ms. Duquette will discuss:
- the characteristics of people pursuing genetic testing in the community setting including:
- the proportion of people who receive genetic counseling prior to the ordering of genetic testing
- the prevalence of ordering of inappropriate genetic tests
- research on patient reported intentions for medical management after genetic testing
This session is appropriate for:
- health care providers seeking basic information about hereditary cancer and genetics
- patient advocates who work with high-risk patients or survivors
