Session: Networking: Young women
Facilitator: Laura Royse, LCSW
This 90-minute concurrent networking session will provide an opportunity for
young survivors and previvors to discuss their challenges with other women in their situation. The session will include discussion of:
- challenges of being single/dating
- challenges of family planning
- fitting risk management decisions into a busy life
- coping with a lifetime of risk
- coping with friends and family who don’t understand what it feels like to be high-risk
There will be opportunity for individuals to discuss and share with the group their
own experiences being young and high-risk, and how they are meeting this challenges. The session
will provide the opportunity for peer-to-peer support and networking.
This session is appropriate for
- young women who carry a BRCA mutation or who are high risk for cancer due to a family history
of cancer
- parents/relatives/loved ones of young women who may carry a BRCA mutation
- patient advocates and support group facilitators who work with people with a BRCA mutation or
hereditary cancer in the family
- health care providers who provide care to young women with BRCA mutations
- social workers/mental health care professionals who treat people with BRCA mutations
