Session: Hereditary cancer in high-risk men
Speakers: Kelly Metcalfe, RN, PhD and Tuya Pal, MD
This 90-minute concurrent session will focus on medical recommendations and psychosocial support needs for men who carry a BRCA mutation.
Drs. Metcalfe and Pal will address:
- emerging data on prognosis and treatment specific to BRCA-associated prostate cancer
- emerging information and clinical trials looking at cancer risks in male BRCA carriers and risk-management options
- current risk-management recommendations for men with BRCA mutations
- the lifetime and age-specific cancer risks for men with BRCA 1 and BRCA 2
- psychosocial needs of men with mutation
- behavioral and emotional outcomes for men who have undergone genetic testing
- reasons why men might or might not want to know their BRCA mutation status
- unique challenges for men in discussing cancer risk and information with family members
This session is appropriate for:
