My name is Amy and I am 27 years old. My oldest sister (38) was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of this year (2012). She is currently going through chemo and will be having a bilateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery after her treatments end in August. She founf out that her breast cancer was caused by the BRCA2 gene mutation so my other sister (30) and I got tested. I came back BRCA2 positive and my sister was negative. After careful consideration, I have decided to get a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. I feel like this may take some weight off my shoulders of worrying about that 87% risk every day.
The hardest part of my journey
The hardest part of my journey so far is the constant fear of what my breasts will look like after the reconstruction. I'm only 27, still dating and don't want to become self concious about my body image. It has been difficult to find people my age to talk about this with that have shared my same fears.
If I could do it over again
I've never had regrets in my life so I am quite confident I will be happy with my decision at the end of the day. This is ultimately about preventing cancer and giving myself the luxury of not having to go through what my sister is going through.
My participation with FORCE
Becoming a part of this amazing community has raised my awareness level to the point where my sisters and I want to start our own branch of genetic breast cancer awareness. I'm empowered and motivated by so many of these amazing stories and I want to help as many young women as I can. I hope to one day be a strong voice for genetic breast/ovarian cancer awareness as no one needs to walk through this alone!
