I am a married mother of 3 active children. I have lost too many women in my family to breast cancer. As soon as my mother was diagnosed I wanted to get a baseline mammogram, but couldn't because I was nursing my 2nd child. I finally decided 2 years ago to get tested. The age of onset in my family seems to be late 30's to early 40's. I want to be around for my kids when they are older and my grandkids. I had a total hysterectomy and oophorectomy in November of 2009 and this past June I had a double prophylactic skin-sparing mastectomy. I feel this site is a blessing for people like me. God Bless you on your journey. It's not easy....but to have the knowledge my mother did not is very empowering.
The hardest part of my journey
Until I found this site, I felt alone. I did not know so many young women like myself are doing the same thing. I find it interesting that most of the people who test positive for a mutation and have lost their mothers have gone through with the whole surgery. Others seem to be more cautious. The hardest part would have to be helping my two daughters912 and 10) deal with everything and the possibility that they too might have to go through it. Let's hope not!!
If I could do it over again
Prepare my self better for the reality of expanders! Not what I thought it was going to be at all. As a former collegiate athlete, this is the toughest muscle work out I have ever been through. Push-ups and bench press can only begin to transform your pecs. Expanders can be painful if you don't fill slowly! I should have gone for bigger numbers earlier, then take your time! As you get closer to the volume of the expander you have to go in smaller cc increments.
