Found out about BRCA1+ status between 6 months to 1 year ago. Tested because I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my oncologist thought it would be a good idea to have me checked. I agreed with him and got the test done. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and passed away in 2004. We do not know whether or not she carried the gene, but we believe she did. My family has Jewish ancestry. I have managed my risk with increased surveillance, chemo prevention, and a prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction with expanders.
The hardest part of my journey
Dealing with the cancer itself.
If I could do it over again
Nothing. I did what I could have done with the knowledge I had.
My participation with FORCE
I served as the Austin Coordinator for FORCE, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet others like myself and give them the support they need.
I have four cats and a wonderful husband. I plan to head back to school for teaching in the next couple of months. I have not let cancer stop me from doing what I want to do.
