Thanks to my brave sister, who is alive and well after two breast cancer bouts before 40, I chose to have the genetic testing and was also diagnosed BRCA1 positive in 2004. I moved quickly to have my ovaries/ tubes removed but I already had stage 2 OV CA. I soon learned that this was a blessing in disguise, to be diagnosed at an early stage, which is rare for OV CA. After the standard 6 chemo treatments, I was blessedly in remission for 7 years before my OV CA recurrence. I am now again in remission, aware that BRCA patients respond better to OV CA chemotherapy. I also chose the elective double mastectomy (now known as Angelina's decision)and pre-cancerous cells were found in 2005. The genetic testing has saved my life TWICE in my opinion. I give thanks to God for this.
The hardest part of my journey
Seeing others who are not considering the testing and praying that they do not regret their decision. Seeing fellow OV CA patients struggle through their treatments.
If I could do it over again
Attend the FORCE conferences sooner !!!! I was afraid to go alone in 2010, but took the bold step in 2011 and I've never looked back.
My participation with FORCE
FORCE is an amazing group and I am grateful for all that they do. I have attended the last two conferences in Orlando and I am definitely looking forward to Philadelphia in 2014. I have met some amazing friends through FORCE. Thank you.
