My journey

My beautiful mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 40 and lost her battle at 45. I was 17 years old. Ever since then my dad encouraged me to get tested for the BRCA mutations. I finally visited with a genetic counselor in 2005 and shortly after learned that I was BRCA1+.

When I received my BRCA status I was newly engaged and knew that I wanted to have children. I felt like I still had some time to start a family and do all of the "things" that I needed to do before undergoing surgery. Fastforward 8 years...I now have 2 beautiful crazy boys, had my oophorectomy in May 2010 and my PBM in October 2011.

I haven't looked back since. I know for certain that I made the right choice for me and my family. I knew that I wanted to do everything in my power to stay healthy for my kids and for my husband. I am very happy with the outcome of my PBM. I feel beautiful and most importantly I am healthy.

The hardest part of my journey

The hardest part of my journey was seeing my mom suffer through her illness. Even though she never once complained I knew that she was in pain. She always put on a brave face for me.

If I could do it over again

I would not change a thing if I had to do this over again. I am at peace with all of the decisions that I have made for myself and for my family.

My participation with FORCE

FORCE has been a tremendous resource during my journey. I knew that FORCE was a safe place where I could ask questions about expectations and worries. I also met another remarkable woman who has been through many of the same things that I have been through. We now have a very special friendship.

Other thoughts

If anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to share my story and experiences. Overall my journey has been a positive one and I hope that I can pass on this confidence to others.
