My journey

I am 33, married and have a smart and sassy three year old little girl who makes me smile everyday (she makes me cry sometimes as well, she is three, par for the course!)

My fathers mother and her sisters passed away from ovarian or breast cancer at a young age. When my father called and told me he was positive for BRCA1 and suggested my sister and I were tested, there was no question, I felt I had to know. Honestly, it never really occured to me that I would test positive as well, breast and ovarian cancer seemed so far removed from me, I was lucky to never have to watch someone close to me fight the disease. My sister is negative and I thank God for that. I have an aunt who is positive and very knowledgable about the gene, I feel lucky to have her to help guide me. At this point, I have decided to take the increased surveillance route until I fully understand this diagnosis and what it means for me and my family.

The hardest part of my journey

Accepting is still hard. Navigating around the diagnosis and feeling confident in my decisions is hard as well. I suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder as well, some days I feel like a ball of emotion and worry, other days I am too busy to think about it (although its always in the back of my mind hiding!) The thought that I may have passed this to my little girl makes my stomach turn, that is really hard! BUT, overall I feel lucky to have the knowledge and have found some really great doctors who are guiding me on my journey. My family and friends are amazing as well.

If I could do it over again

No, I wouldn't. I am at the beginning of my journey and feel that knowledge is power so onward I go!

My participation with FORCE
